Sacculina carcini is NOT very host specific, it can infest a range in species in Europe, and it even seems the cypris larvae will try to infest some crabs which do not carry the parasite in the field; see: Thresher RE; Werner M; Høeg JT; Svane I; Glenner H; Murphy NE; Wittwer C. 2000. Developing the options for managing marine pests: specificity trials of the parasitic castrator, Sacculina carcini, against the European crab, Carcinus maenas, and related species. J. Exp. Mar. Biol. Ecol. 254: 37-51. 2. According to my own book with Dr. Lutzen: Hoeg JT; Lutzen J (1985). Crustacea Rhizocephala. Marine Invertebrates of Scandinavia No. 6 , the only sacculid recorded from Cancer pagurus is Sacculina triangularis. Without actually seeing the specimens, I cannot be certain whether you do in fact have S. triangularis or something else on your host in question. If you are interested, Dr. Luetzen and I would be pleased to examine the specimens. Should they turn out to be S. carcini it would indeed be interesting. I am presently doing a large scale project on rhizocephalan taxonomy, and any pertinent information (and specimens) are important to this end. 3) Please also note: Øksnebjerg B. 2000. The Rhizocephala (Crustacea: Cirripedia) of the Mediterranean and Black seas: Taxonomy, biogeography, and ecology). Israel journal of zoology 46(1): 1-102. which is the newest publication out of this lab on rhizocephalan taxonomy. Sincerely Jens Jens T. Hoeg, D.sc. The crab's carapace was pinkish-grey colour - not the normal brown of a healthy specimen. The eyes of the Cancer crab were vivid lime-green. I have seen Sacculina only twice during my 6 years in Guernsey. Once on a similar-sized Cancer pagurus in a crab pot and this specimen. I believe that some Sacculina are host specific. This specimen looks like Sacculina carcini and not S. triangularis as suggested in one of my books. I would like to know why the eye colour is affected by the parasite. Will the Cancer crab be able to moult with the parasite? The carapace and pereiopods have spirorbids on them.
