A New Bridge ?

November 2006
The Shoreham Society supports the idea (no more than that at this stage) of a replacement Footbridge (to include passage for cyclists and electric buggies) from Coronation Green, High Street, Shoreham to Shoreham Beach.

Picture Competition for New Shoreham-by-Sea Footbridge, for all ages:

The Shoreham Society sent out an open invitation for pictures and designs for a replacement footbridge. The aim was to provide awareness of the replacement footbridge which is required under the Shoreham Renaissance proposals and to come up with imaginative ideas to make it an iconic centre piece for Shoreham-by-Sea. This ‘fun project’ was also a learning project and an interesting challenge for people of all ages in schools, for art clubs and for individuals. The competition was supported by Adur District Council and by SEEDA.  An event was held in Shoreham on 27th March 2007 morning with SUSTRANS to publicise cycling as effective personal transport.

The present concrete footbridge was built in the 1920s, as an early reinforced concrete structure, to link the centre of Shoreham to the Beach, crossing the river Adur. It is now nearing the end of its effective life, and funding, in excess of £2 million is being sought for its replacement.
See http://www.sustransconnect2.org.uk/projects/project_detail.php?id=54 which refers to SUSTRANS and the encouragement of cycling for sustainable transport.
