The Shoreham Society is an independent voice for the residents of the town of Shoreham-by-sea in West Sussex on all matters concerning town planning, conservation, development and its environs. The Society, formed in 1984, is non-political and free of all commercial interests. It works for conservation of Shoreham’s historic architecture and the enhancement of the town’s environment by encouraging an enlightened approach to planning. An Executive Committee
sets the Society’s policy and strategy, which is based on consultation
with the members.
A regular Journal keeps our members informed of all developments and activities, including forthcoming events. It is only with a strong voice, and by means of concerted action and presence by residents, that changes can be brought about in planning and development, also when changes are necessary to conserve and improve the town’s unique features. The Society is registered with the Civic Trust, who act at national level and whose recommended model constitution has been adopted by the Society Town Development A Sub-Committee of professional members, including architects, surveyors and town planners, closely monitor planning applications for all proposed developments, and at an early stage, where necessary submit suggestions for improvements and/or objections. In unique cases, the Society and its members call for outright rejection by Adur District Council.
Public Relations & Social Events The Shoreham Society’s
Public Relations Officer keeps the public and local media informed of the
developments in current issues in which the Society is involved. The Social
Secretary and helpers arrange a diversity of monthly talks by distinguished
speakers, designed to promote local appreciation of the history, ecology
and architecture of the area and many other subjects. These and other social
events, such as the Christmas Fayre, enhance the growth of membership.

The
Shoreham Society is involved in the care and maintenance of the Marlipins
Museum and assist with events, displays and putting up exhibitions. The
Sussex Archaeological Society provides a senior museum officer (Helen Poole).
We provide volunteer custodians from May to October who are on hand to
guide visitors around the museum and answer questions. The replacement
of the annexe as a double storey building with a large facilities room
was completed with the help of Heritage Lottery and money from the Shoreham
Society and the legacy from Reg Leggett. This facility room is used for
many events and exhibitions, some of which are held in partnership with
other national organisations.
